The Back Story:
Art used to be an exotic thing
to me-something understood only by those born into some mysterious circle of talent
or money. But I loved art, and the more I traveled and
was exposed to styles and cultures outside of my own, the stronger my desire grew to express more than just “appreciation”-I
wanted to create!
So, I decided I would learn
to paint. At age 40. I approached the
education seriously- books, workshops and practice time. In the early days, I was intent on getting
all details just right. I practiced
accurate drawing, followed the light, studied color theory, evaluated perspective….
You know, all the golden rules of “good” art.
And yes, while I understood the “rules” and could recreate the way most
things look, it was lacking ME.
So, out of frustration and boredom,
I took a different approach- squeezed out gobs
of paint, picked up any object within reach and just let it go! Using brushes, sponges, credit cards, crayons,
chalk, pencils, paint, and MUSIC- lots of music- I splattered, scraped,
scribbled and made a wild mess. And
I loved it!!
Put it all together, over
many canvases, some bad dancing and the last 10 years… a more authentic expression
has emerged.
My work is about life energy and the joy of creating without judgement. And with this approach to the work, every single day, I can’t wait to discover what awaits -just
beyond the mess!
